Convert a WhatsApp voice message to text: every option compared
October 23, 2026 · 5 min read
WhatsApp can now transcribe voice messages itself — but not in every language, not on every device, and not as a file. Which options exist, when each one fits, and how to save a message as a file.
Long voice messages are convenient for the person speaking and annoying for the person listening: on the train, at the office, in a lecture. Text can be skimmed, searched and forwarded. There are three ways to get there — and each has its own limit.
Option 1: WhatsApp's own transcription
WhatsApp offers voice message transcripts under Settings, Chats. Recognition runs on the device, which is good for privacy. The downside: only a selection of languages is supported, some older devices are left out, and you cannot export the result as a file with timestamps. For a quick message, that is often enough.
Option 2: your phone's dictation
Some people play the message out loud and let dictation type along. It works, but it is error-prone: the speaker distorts the sound, background noise gets in, and you have to play the whole message in real time. For anything longer than a minute or two, it is not a good option.
Option 3: save the message as a file and transcribe it
The most reliable option: save the message as a file and give it to a transcription service. You get text with timestamps, can file it as Word, PDF or TXT, and you are not limited to WhatsApp's language list.
- iPhone: long-press the message, tap Forward, then the share icon at the bottom right and “Save to Files”.
- Android: long-press the message, tap Share at the top and save the file to Files or Google Drive.
- WhatsApp saves voice messages as .opus, Telegram as .ogg, Signal as .m4a or .aac.
- No MP3 conversion is needed on Sprechverlauf: Opus, OGG and M4A are read directly.
Which option when?
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Short message in a language WhatsApp supports | Built-in transcription |
| Message in a language WhatsApp does not cover | Save the file and transcribe online |
| Content needs to be archived or shared | Save the file, export as Word or PDF |
| Several people speak (e.g. a forwarded conversation) | Online with speaker separation |
Privacy: what happens to the message?
Voice messages are private. If you upload someone else's message, you are passing their voice to a service — when in doubt, ask them first. On Sprechverlauf, the file goes through OpenRouter with zero data retention to the recognition model; the AI provider stores neither audio nor text, and the file is deleted after processing.
